Spanish Schematic and Machinery Terms: A Working Glossary

Technical guide · Schematic Translator · September 2026

Machinery built in Spain, and machines documented for Spanish-speaking crews across Latin America, often carries schematics, nameplates, and maintenance pages that stay in Spanish for the machine's whole life. The good news for a technician: the symbols on a Spanish hydraulic schematic follow ISO 1219 and read exactly like their English-language equivalents. What you need is the vocabulary printed around them.

This glossary collects the Spanish terms technicians meet most often on schematics, nameplates, and maintenance pages, with plain English equivalents. Accents matter for lookup: válvula and presión will not look up correctly without them.

New to the symbols themselves? How to Read a Hydraulic Schematic walks through the ISO 1219 symbols, port labels, and a step-by-step method for tracing any circuit.

Components: valves

SpanishEnglishNotes
la válvulavalvethe general word
válvula limitadora de presión / válvula de seguridadpressure relief valve / safety valvelimits maximum system pressure
válvula reductora de presiónpressure reducing valvelimits pressure downstream
válvula de retención (antirretorno)check valveone-direction flow
válvula de corte / de aislamientoshut-off valveisolation, not control
válvula distribuidoradirectional control valveoften seen with a count, e.g. distribuidor 4/3
válvula proporcionalproportional valvecontinuously variable
válvula de estrangulaciónthrottle valveflow control; with a built-in check for free return: con antirretorno

Components: pumps, cylinders, and accessories

Pressures, flow, and readings

SpanishEnglish

presión de pruebatest pressure
presión de entrada / contrapresióninlet pressure / back pressure
el caudalflow rate
el (régimen de) girorotational speed (rpm)
el par (motor)torque
la fuerza / la carreraforce / stroke
la fuga / el aceite de fugaleakage / case oil (case drain)
la temperatura / el calentamientotemperature / heating (temperature rise)

Port labels on Spanish directional valves

Spanish hydraulic drawings use the same international port letters as ISO drawings: P (presión), T (tanque, tank return), A and B (tomas de trabajo, the working ports), X, Y, Z (pilotaje, pilot ports), and L (retorno de fugas or drenaje, the case drain). The letters transfer directly; the words beside them are what need translating.

Lines and connections

SpanishEnglish
la tubería / la manguerapipe / hose
línea de presiónpressure line
línea de retornoreturn line
línea de aspiraciónsuction line
línea piloto / de mandopilot / control line
el racor / la uniónfitting / connection

Maintenance and documentation words

SpanishEnglish
el mantenimientomaintenance
la reparaciónrepair
el cambio de aceiteoil change
el cambio de filtrofilter change
el plan de engraselubrication schedule
el manual de instruccionesoperating manual
el esquema (hidráulico)schematic (hydraulic diagram)
el fallo / la averíafault, malfunction
la localización de averíastroubleshooting
instrucciones de seguridadsafety instructions
el ajuste / ajustarsetting / to set, adjust
la comprobación / comprobarinspection, check / to check
en marcha / paradorunning / stopped

Two sentence patterns cover a surprising amount of Spanish maintenance text: "cada X horas de servicio" (every X operating hours) and "consulte el manual de instrucciones" (consult the operating manual).

Field habit: Spanish technical names are descriptive rather than compounded, so a term like válvula limitadora de presión decodes word by word (valve, limiting, of pressure). But setpoints and interlock notes only make sense as complete sentences, so translate whole blocks, not single words.

Standards behind Spanish drawings

Spanish hydraulic schematics are drawn to UNE-EN-ISO 1219, the Spanish adoption of the ISO 1219 fluid power standard, so the symbols read like any ISO drawing. Process and instrumentation documents in Spanish industry often keep ISA-5.1-style tag letters while the surrounding words stay Spanish. The symbols are universal; it is the text around them that needs translating.

Translating the drawing itself

You can hold this glossary next to a drawing and work out most component names. But set pressures, alarm notes, and step-by-step procedures deserve better than word-by-word decoding. Schematic Translator photographs a Spanish schematic and overlays verified English on every text block, keeping every number and symbol exactly as printed, so nothing critical gets guessed.

Have a Spanish schematic on your bench? Photograph it and get verified English overlaid on the original drawing. Every pressure, part number, and symbol stays exactly as the manufacturer printed it.
